Have you ever felt overwhelmed—like life is pressing in on you from every side?
Stress, anxiety, regret, pressure… it builds. And sometimes it feels like you’re being crushed under the weight of it all.
What if I told you that Jesus understands that feeling more than anyone else ever could?
Not just emotionally—but literally.
The Night Everything Pressed In
In Matthew 26, we find Jesus in a place called Gethsemane. The name itself means “oil press.” It was a garden on the Mount of Olives where olives were crushed to extract oil.
That’s where Jesus chose to go and pray on the night before the cross.
“My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death… Stay here and keep watch with me.” (Matthew 26:38, summarized)
This wasn’t a casual moment. Jesus wasn’t just a little stressed—He was in deep anguish. The weight of what was coming pressed down on Him so heavily that He fell to the ground and prayed, “Not my will, but yours be done.” (Matthew 26:39)
Why there? Why an oil press?
Because what was happening to Jesus spiritually mirrored what happened to olives physically.
He was being crushed.
The Process of Crushing
In ancient times, olives weren’t gently squeezed—they were crushed under heavy stone presses. It took intense pressure to release the oil inside.
And it didn’t happen just once.
They would press olives three times:
• The first press produced the purest oil, used for worship and anointing.
• The second press produced oil for healing and daily use.
• The third press produced oil for lamps—light in the darkness.
Each press required more pressure. More weight. More crushing.
Nothing was wasted. Everything was poured out.
Now think about Jesus in Gethsemane.
He prays once.
He prays again.
He prays a third time.
Each moment, the weight increases.
Each moment, the pressure intensifies.
Until there is nothing left to give.
What Was Crushing Him?
At first glance, you might think Jesus was overwhelmed by the physical pain of the cross.
But the Bible points us somewhere deeper.
Isaiah 53—written hundreds of years before Jesus—gives us a clear picture:
“He was pierced for our rebellion… crushed for our sins… the Lord laid on Him the sins of us all.” (Isaiah 53:5–6, summarized)
What crushed Jesus wasn’t just the cross—it was our sin.
Every failure.
Every moment of rebellion.
Every ounce of guilt and shame.
Placed on Him.
All at once.
That’s the weight He felt in the garden.
That’s the burden pressing Him to the point of death.
He Carried What We Couldn’t
Here’s the reality: sin is crushing.
Left on our own, it would destroy us. The weight of our past, our mistakes, our brokenness—it’s too much to carry.
But Jesus stepped in.
He didn’t avoid the crushing—He embraced it.
He prayed, “If there’s another way…”—not because He didn’t love us, but because He knew the cost.
And then He said yes anyway.
He chose the cross.
He chose the weight.
He chose to carry what we never could.
What Came Out of the Crushing
Remember the olive press?
The crushing wasn’t pointless. It produced something valuable.
The same is true for Jesus.
Because He was crushed:
• We are forgiven
• We are healed
• We are made new
• We are filled with His Spirit
• We become light in the darkness
What looked like defeat became the source of life.
What looked like suffering became the pathway to salvation.
You Don’t Have to Carry It Anymore
So many of us are still trying to carry what Jesus already took.
We live weighed down by guilt.
We try to earn God’s approval.
We wonder if we’re ever “good enough.”
But the truth is—you’re not.
And that’s exactly why Jesus came.
He didn’t come to help you carry your burden.
He came to take it from you.
Jesus says in Matthew 11:
“Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28, summarized)
That’s the invitation.
Not “try harder.”
Not “fix yourself.”
Not “earn it.”
Just come.
There Is Hope for You
Whatever you’re carrying today—stress, anxiety, sin, regret—Jesus can handle it.
If He could carry the weight of the sin of the world, He can carry what’s on your heart right now.
You don’t have to be crushed by it.
Because He already was.
