Have you ever wondered if God really speaks to people today? Maybe you’ve prayed but felt like your words hit the ceiling, or maybe you’ve longed for some unmistakable sign that God was guiding you. The good news is this: God not only wants to speak to you, He already is. The question isn’t if God speaks—it’s whether we’re listening.
Psalm 95 reminds us of a God who is powerful, creative, and personal—the One who holds the oceans and the mountains in His hands yet calls us His flock under His care. That same God longs to speak into our lives.
But here’s the catch: hearing from God requires active listening, not passive presence. Think about the difference: passive listening is when you’re technically in the room but your mind is on dishes, emails, or scrolling. Active listening is shutting out distractions, leaning in, and holding onto every word because it matters to you.
Many of us treat God like He has to break into our space: “God, if you want to get my attention, I’m here.” But the truth is, we’re the ones called to approach His throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16). When we draw near, He meets us.
So how does God actually speak to us in real life?
1. God Speaks Through Scripture
If you want to recognize God’s voice, start with the book He authored. “All Scripture is God-breathed and useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives” (2 Timothy 3:16, NLT).
The Bible isn’t just an old book of rules—it’s God’s living word that shapes, corrects, and encourages us. It also becomes the “measuring stick” for every other voice we think we hear. If something contradicts Scripture, it’s not from God.
2. God Speaks Through the Holy Spirit
Before Jesus returned to heaven, He promised His followers a Helper: “The Holy Spirit…will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you” (John 14:26, NLT).
The Spirit isn’t just for pastors or prophets—the Spirit lives in every believer. He guides, convicts, and comforts us. And He will never contradict Scripture. If you sense a “nudge” but it pushes you toward bitterness, selfishness, or sin, it’s not the Spirit. God’s Spirit always draws us closer to Him.
3. God Speaks Through Open Doors
Sometimes God’s direction comes in the form of opportunities. Proverbs 16:9 says, “We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.”
That doesn’t mean every open door is automatically from God, but when opportunities line up with Scripture, the Spirit’s leading, and wise counsel, they’re worth stepping through. Think of it like a soccer ball rolling your way—you know what to do because you’ve learned the game. The more time you spend in God’s Word and presence, the more naturally you’ll recognize opportunities from Him.
4. God Speaks Through People
We were never meant to follow Jesus alone. God often uses people—mentors, friends, pastors, small group leaders—to bring encouragement and wisdom.
The apostle Paul shared how he was deeply discouraged, but “God, who encourages those who are discouraged, encouraged us by the arrival of Titus” (2 Corinthians 7:6, NLT). Titus didn’t perform a miracle—he just showed up. And sometimes your presence in someone’s life is exactly how God speaks to them.
Application:
Put these together—Scripture, the Spirit, open doors, and godly people—and you have a reliable way to discern God’s voice. But you’ll also need discernment because not every voice in your life is from God.
• God’s voice always inspires and draws you closer.
• The enemy tempts and pushes you away.
• Your own self often justifies staying comfortable.
Learning God’s voice is like the sheep in John 10—when the shepherd calls, they recognize Him immediately and come running. The more you walk closely with Jesus, the quicker you’ll recognize when He’s speaking.
Closing Encouragement:
God isn’t playing hide-and-seek with you. He wants you to know His voice. He wants to guide you in big decisions and small everyday choices. Whether it’s through His Word, His Spirit, open doors, or His people, God is speaking. The question is—are you listening?
This blog was inspired by Pastor Shawn’s message from 1 Kings 19. Don’t mistake His silence for absence—He’s still speaking.
